Prospective Graduate Students

The Pediatric Psychology Lab is a collaborative group of graduate students mentored by Dr. David Janicke. Our research broadly aims to investigate interactions between psychosocial factors and various pediatric chronic health conditions. Ongoing and recently completed student-led research projects have focused on topics such as the potential impacts of weight stigma and bias on health care, and sleep and coping in pediatric Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD), food insecurity and parent feeding practices, psychological functioning and spiritual coping in young adults with cancer, and peer relationships among adolescents and young adults with chronic pain, discordance between child and caregiver reports of health behaviors and psychosocial functioning, and the relationship between social determinants of health behavior (i.e. neighborhood opportunity) and health and psychosocial functioning in youth with sickle cell disease. Much of Dr. Janicke’s past research has investigated family-based behavioral health interventions for pediatric overweight and obesity, often with a focus on youth from rural settings. In addition to actively collaborating on student research projects, we have weekly lab meetings that comprise of professional development seminars, journal clubs, and mentored reviews of submitted manuscripts. Beyond research, the students in the pediatric psychology lab are active clinicians engaging in weekly therapy through the department’s training clinic and rotating through advanced practicum clinics on interdisciplinary medical teams.
