Post-Doctoral Fellow: Sarah Westen (Winner – Award: $10,000)

Title: Sleep, Adherence, and Glycemic Control in Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes. Description: The purpose of this study is to examine relationships between objectively-measured sleep parameters, blood glucose regulation and adherence in adolescents with type one diabetes. Further, this study aims to assess links between sleep, glycemic control, and adherence with psychological variables, such as diabetes-related distress and fear of hypoglycemia. This study will answer a need for person-centered research in adolescents with T1D, using objective data from novel treatment technology.

Description: Jennifer was 1 of 5 student research award winners for 2018. Her study will examine environmental and familial factors relating to pediatric obesity in young children. Jennifer graduated from Northwestern University and completed two years of post-baccalaureate training before joining the pediatric psychology team in the Fall 2015.

Title: The Impact of Parent Feeding Practices on the Eating Behaviors of Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Survivors. Description: The purpose of this study is to examine mechanisms by which problematic eating behaviors develop in the context of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in order to potentially inform intervention efforts to promote healthy weight and long-term outcomes for youth that survived past treatment completion. First, we aim to elucidate the eating behaviors of childhood ALL survivors relative to peers with no cancer history. Second, we will examine the cross-sectional relationships between parents’ feeding practices (during and after medical treatment) and children’s eating behaviors in survivorship.

Title: The Impact of Pre-Surgical Dietary and Psychosocial Factors on Post-Surgical Diet in a Population of Bariatric Surgery Patients. Description: The project utilizes a longitudinal design to examine how daily caloric intake and psychosocial factors, such as stress, social support, sleep, and emotion regulation are indicative of dietary outcomes after bariatric surgery. This study may help health professionals identify appropriate targets for preoperative interventions to prepare patients for making the recommended lifestyle changes after bariatric surgery.
